🩺 Troubleshooting

Problems mappers have actually hit, and what fixes them.

Far-away trees and buildings are solid red (or any flat colour)

Two things together:

  1. The fog value is too high. Fog is drawn at double strength, so 255 in a fog box is already past full and far objects become flat shapes of that colour. Use half the colour you want (110,20,20 for a red haze), or set it through MED's Map Colours window, which halves it for you.
  2. The horizon was not changed to match. Distant objects take the fog colour, but the sky behind them is the horizon colour, so they stand out like cut-outs. Tick Horizon same as fog in MED's Map Colours (TEST11+), or set Horizon Color / skyfogcolor to the same half values.

Example: the first mapper to try the colours typed 255,0,0 into the fog box and left the horizon alone: bright red palms and buildings against a lavender sky.

My colours do nothing in game

My Map Colours disappeared

The map was saved by an older MED (TEST9 or before, or the stock MED). Older MEDs open v2 maps without complaint but drop the colours when they save. Set them again in MED v2 and make sure everyone working on the map uses it.

A trigger points at event 0 (or the wrong event)

MED before TEST12 only listed events 0-255 in the event pickers. Opening a trigger or a Reset Event action that pointed at an event above 255 showed event 0, and pressing OK saved it as event 0. Open the trigger in TEST12, pick the right event, save.

My .wac script does nothing at all

WAC files must use Windows (CRLF) line endings. A file with Unix (LF) endings compiles to nothing and gives no error. In Notepad++: Edit › EOL Conversion › Windows (CR LF). Windows Notepad keeps whatever the file already had, so check files that came from other tools.

My new MED vanished after a TAC update

The TAC updater replaces JOTACmed.exe. Keep MED v2 under its own name, for example JOTACmed_v2.exe.

MED or Nile crashed

Both write a crash file (.dmp) next to the exe and try an emergency save of your map; a box tells you where. Post the .dmp in #sysdumps in TAC Mappers HQ with a line about what you were doing. Recover from the _crash file or an autosave, then Save As your map's name.
